Ottawa and Quebec Fund $384M in Projects Across The Province

Quebec City, Quebec, September 13, 2009 – The Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, Minister for La Francophonie and Minister responsible for the Region of Quebec City, and Sam Hamad, Quebec Minister of Employment and Social Solidarity, Minister of Labour and Minister Responsible for the Region of Quebec City, are pleased to announce, on behalf of their respective governments, joint financial support of nearly $303 million under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund for 92 new projects in Quebec. With the contributions of municipalities and other organizations, the investment totals nearly $365 million.

The governments of Canada and Quebec also announced $80 million in joint funding under the federal-provincial agreement on the Programme de renouvellement des conduites d'eau potable et d'eaux usées (PRECO) for a group of 63 Quebec municipalities.

This is the third wave of investment in the province of Quebec, since the first announcement in July, for projects arising out of the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, which can begin construction immediately. With today's announcement, the governments of Canada and Quebec have announced investments in more than 200 infrastructure projects which brings the total joint federal-provincial contribution close to $875 million and will stimulate our economy by creating jobs for Quebecers,” said Minister Verner. “The agreement on these projects is another example of the outstanding co-operation between our two governments.

We want Quebec and its municipalities to acquire high-quality infrastructure to make their residents proud. These investments, as well as all those announced in the past few months, demonstrate our government's commitment to get the projects provided for in the Plan québécois des infrastructures under way as quickly as possible in order to maintain and renew our infrastructure while stimulating our economy,” said Minister Hamad.

More than $125M in the Quebec City area

The Ministers made the announcement in L'Ancienne-Lorette, which will receive a joint contribution of $6.5 million to build a multi-generational training centre. The municipality will contribute another $3.3 million to the project, which is expected to cost $9.8 million. The training centre, with an area of about 2,100 m2, will be built in Parc de la Rivière, on the site of a former arena, and will include water basins and a multipurpose hall.

Projects worth over $125 million, including municipal contributions, will be carried out in the Quebec City area.
