Canada-BC Partner to Create Jobs, Stimulate Economy

27 infrastructure projects will receive funding across the province

Victoria, British Columbia, November 19, 2009 – The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, and the Honourable Shirley Bond, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, today announced funding for 27 new infrastructure projects that will stimulate British Columbia’s regional economies through job creation.  The federal and provincial governments are together investing over $145 million, and when combined with investments from local governments and partners, the total is more than $150 million.

The event took place at Victoria’s Ogden Point Deep Sea Terminal, which will receive $900,000 from the federal government to expand the port and increase the number and size of cruise ships that will be able to dock in Victoria. The provincial government had previously contributed $1.5 million towards the project. Other projects announced today will also support improvements to 21 roads and highways, as well as trails, sewers and other facilities.

As part of our Economic Action Plan, we are investing in new projects -- such as roads, highways, sewers and ports -- that will create B.C. jobs during these tough economic times,” said Minister Day. “Working together, we can build the infrastructure that will help British Columbia and the economy to thrive now and in the future.

From cruise ship terminal improvements in Victoria, to highway improvements in the Kootenays, these infrastructure dollars are flowing to communities all over the province,” said Minister Bond. “Today’s announcements build on the $4.1 billion in infrastructure projects we’ve announced in the last year, which are putting people to work and improving the vital infrastructure that connects all British Columbians.

"These improvements to the province’s highways are important for continued safe travel and trade,” said Jack Davidson, president of the B.C. Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association. “Every infrastructure dollar that flows into our road network helps to improve our competitive advantage as Canada’s Asia-Pacific gateway.

Today's announcement represents a contribution of over $64 million from the Government of Canada through the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, and almost $82 million from the province of British Columbia.  The remaining funds will be provided by local governments and partners in British Columbia.

The federal $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund provides funding to provincial, territorial and municipal construction-ready infrastructure rehabilitation projects that will be built now and during the 2010 construction seasons.

The projects are funded under the Province’s three-year, $14-billion capital infrastructure program, which will create up to 88,000 jobs and help build vital public infrastructure in every region of B.C. To date, over $4.1 billion has already been announced for projects across British Columbia, which will create an estimated 26,000 jobs.
