Stimulus Funds to Improve Sewer System in Chilliwack

Stimulus funding will create jobs, stimulate regional economy

Chilliwack, British Columbia, December 16, 2009 - Residents of Chilliwack will benefit from sewer upgrades worth $3.8 million in joint federal, provincial and municipal funding.  The federal government will contribute up to one-third of eligible costs, to a maximum of $1.3 million.

“This is a great project for our community, which when completed will protect our aquifer while benefitting local residents,” said Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP Chuck Strahl. “Replacing aging infrastructure is a priority for our government and I have worked closely with my provincial and municipal colleagues to ensure that this upgrade moves forward.”

The Stevenson/South Sumas/Tyson Sanitary Sewers Phase 1 project will provide sewage service for approximately 295 properties in the Sardis Community resulting in more efficient wastewater collection, decreased risk of groundwater contamination, and improved community health.

“We have been planning for these sewer improvements for some time,” said Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz. “The City and affected residents are extremely thankful to the federal and provincial governments for recognizing the need for these upgrades and providing generous funding contributions.”

This project is supported by the Government of Canada’s new $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund.    The Fund was introduced under Canada’s Economic Action Plan in collaboration with all levels of government to advance infrastructure projects across Canada provided that projects will be completed by March 31, 2011. To date, 350 projects worth over $1 billion in the province of British Columbia have received over $430 million in federal funding as part of the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund.

The Government of Canada’s 2009 Economic Action Plan includes a vast array of initiatives to help to stimulate the economy, create jobs, build consumer confidence, and assist Canadians when they need it most during this global economic recession.  New large-scale infrastructure programs are one important element of this plan.
