The Green Infrastructure Fund

Future Site of Mayo B Hydro FacilityThe Green Infrastructure Fund, introduced in the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, focuses on green priorities and sustainable energy infrastructure. One billion dollars over five years will help ensure that Canada emerges from the current economic downturn with greener and more modern infrastructure.

Provinces, territories, local or regional governments, public sector bodies, non-profit organizations and private companies are eligible for Green Infrastructure funding.  Support will target the construction or material rehabilitation of publically- or privately-owned fixed capital assets that are primarily for public use or benefit. Project categories include the generation and transmission of clean energy, carbon transmission and storage, wastewater treatment and solid waste management.

Funding will be allocated to projects based on merit. It is expected that the fund will support a relatively small number of large, strategic, and cost-shared initiatives that will provide long-term environmental benefits.  An overview of program guidelines can be found on the Creating Jobs website

Targeted investments in green infrastructure can improve the quality of the environment and will lead to a more sustainable economy over the longer term.

On May 29, 2009, the governments of Canada and Yukon announced that the enhancement of existing hydro power infrastructure at the Mayo Hydro Facility along with Phase II of the Carmacks-Stewart transmission line will be the first project to be funded under the Green Infrastructure Fund.
