Alberta

The Government of Canada and the Province of Alberta signed the Canada-Alberta Framework Agreement on August 29, 2008. Between 2007 and 2014, more than $2.195 billion will be provided for infrastructure improvements in Alberta under the Building Canada Plan.

New Infrastructure Stimulus Fund

Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, the federal government has established a new $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund that provides funding to provincial, territorial, municipal and community construction-ready infrastructure projects. Funding is available for projects that will be built over the next two years (2009-10 and 2010-11).

National Recreational Trails

Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada is investing $25 million to improve over 500 recreational trails across Canada. This investment in Canada's outdoor heritage will help to quickly create jobs, support into local economies, and attract tourists. To provide the most rapid economic benefit possible during this challenging economic time, funding will go to shovel-ready projects that are set to break ground and be completed in 2009-2010.

Green Infrastructure Fund

Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, the federal government will provide $1 billion over five years for a Green Infrastructure Fund (GIF). This Fund supports sustainable energy generation and transmission, along with municipal wastewater adn solid waste management infrastructure. Targeted investments in green infrastructure can improve the quality of the tenvironment and will lead to a more sustainable economy over the longer term.

Building Canada Fund

The Building Canada Fund will provide $840.73 million towards infrastructure initiatives in Alberta under the following two components: This link will take you outside the Creating Jobs website Communities Component for smaller communities ($88 million) and Major Infrastructure Component for large scale initiatives ($752.73 million).

On January 6, 2009, the Communities Component was officially launched in the Province of Alberta.

Provincial/Territorial Base Fund

Under the Framework Agreement, the Province of Alberta will also receive a total of $175 million in base funding, through to 2014 for core infrastructure priorities.

Gas Tax Fund

Just over $1.16 billion in gas tax funding (2007-2014) has begun flowing, and will flow, to Alberta municipalities with the extension of the Gas Tax Agreement from 2010 to 2014.

Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund

Alberta municipalities are receiving $19.05 million through the Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund Top Up.

This funding was announced by the Government of Canada in May 2007 to ensure continuity of funding particularly for small communities to address infrastructure priorities such as water, wastewater, roads and transit.

Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridors Initiative

The Government of Canada has committed over $1 billion to the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative, with $75 million being committed to initiatives in Alberta.
