British Columbia

The Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia signed the Canada-British Columbia Framework Agreement on November 6, 2007. Between 2007 and 2014, just over $2.724 billion will be provided for infrastructure improvements in British Columbia under the Building Canada Plan.

New Infrastructure Stimulus Fund

Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, the federal government has established a new $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund that provides funding to provincial, territorial, municipal and community construction-ready infrastructure projects. Funding is available for projects that will be built over the next two years (2009-10 and 2010-11).

National Recreational Trails

Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada is investing $25 million to improve over 500 recreational trails across Canada. This investment in Canada's outdoor heritage will help to quickly create jobs, support into local economies, and attract tourists. To provide the most rapid economic benefit possible during this challenging economic time, funding will go to shovel-ready projects that are set to break ground and be completed in 2009-2010.

Green Infrastructure Fund

Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, the federal government will provide $1 billion over five years for a Green Infrastructure Fund (GIF). This Fund supports sustainable energy generation and transmission, along with municipal wastewater and solid waste management infrastructure. Targeted investments in green infrastructure can improve the quality of the environment and will lead to a more sustainable economy over the longer term.

Building Canada Fund

The Building Canada Fund will provide more than $1.039 billion towards infrastructure initiatives in British Columbia under the following two components: Communities Component for smaller communities — under 100,000 — ($136 million, which includes $25 million for flood mitigation) and Major Infrastructure Component for large scale initiatives ($903.96 million).

On July 7, 2008, the Communities Component was officially launched in the Province of British Columbia.

Gas Tax Fund

Just over $1.485 billion in gas tax funding (2007-2014) has begun flowing, and will flow, to British Columbia municipalities with the extension of the Gas Tax Agreement from 2010 to 2014.

Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund

British Columbia municipalities are receiving $23.59 million through the Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund Top Up.

This funding was announced by the Government of Canada in May 2007 to ensure continuity of funding particularly for small communities to address infrastructure priorities such as water, wastewater, roads and transit.

Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative

The Government of Canada has committed over $1 billion to the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative, with $800 million being committed to projects in British Columbia.
