Under the Canada-New Brunswick Framework Agreement, $188.09 million from the Building Canada Fund will go towards infrastructure initiatives in New Brunswick under the following two components:
$28.49 million in funding will support larger-scale projects, particularly public infrastructure projects that have a national or regional impact and generate significant benefits in terms of a growing economy, a cleaner environment or stronger communities.
$126.6 million has already been approved for major infrastructure projects, such as improvements to New Brunswick's highway infrastructure and the completion of the Saint John Harbour clean up.
Under the Major Infrastructure Component, project proposals may be identified by provinces, local governments, or the private sector (not-for-profit and for-profit). Project priorities are determined through federal-provincial discussions. Once identified as a priority, proponents will be contacted and asked to submit a project overview (sometimes referred to as a business case) that includes an assessment of the proposed project. Prior to the approval of federal funding, a federal review of the business case is undertaken to evaluate project eligibility, benefits and risks and to ensure that the project meets minimum federal requirements.
$33 million has been fully allocated to smaller-scale projects in communities with populations of fewer than 100,000.
