Infrastructure Stimulus Fund in Northwest Territories

New in Canada's Economic Action Plan

Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, the federal government has established a new $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund that provides funding to provincial, territorial, municipal and community construction-ready infrastructure projects. The Infrastructure Stimulus Fund complements existing federal infrastructure funding by focusing on short-term objectives for economic stimulus.

About the Program

The Infrastructure Stimulus Fund will provide $4 billion for the construction of infrastructure projects to be built over the next two years (2009-10 and 2010-11). To provide short-term stimulus to the economy, construction readiness will be a key project selection criteria; for example, the rehabilitation and retrofit of existing assets to improve safety or extend their useful life. Eligible projects include water, wastewater, transit, roads, culture, parks, trails and community services infrastructure (see Program Guide for eligibility).

How it Works

To ensure that the program provides economic stimulus quickly, and to ensure partnership with the provinces and territories, the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund is being rolled out in a flexible manner.

On July 11, 2009, the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund was officially launched in the Northwest Territories.

Projects that Have Been Announced

On July 11, 2009, the governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories announced that three infrastructure projects in the Northwest Territories will receive joint federal-territorial and federal-municipal investments totalling $1,453,000 under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund: the repair and renovation of the reception building at Nitainlaii Territorial Park, the rehabilitation of the utilidor system in the Town of Norman Wells, and the renovation and expansion of the Antoine Beaulieu Community Hall in Fort Resolution.

On September 10, 2009, Canada and the Northwest Territories announced a joint investment of $7,951,000 for an additional 15 territorial and municipal infrastructure projects that will create jobs and help build stronger communities.

On January 18, 2010, Canada and the Northwest Territories announced $250,000 in joint funding for local road development in Kakisa, and $250,000 in joint funding for construction and retrofits to the fire hall in Enterprise.

On February 10, 2010, Canada and the Northwest Territories announced $2.8 million in joint funding under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund for local road development in Inuvik. Funding will support the paving of local roads and further the town’s goal of paving most of the community’s roads between now and March 31, 2011.
